When two reports disagree, teams often respond by building a third. The underlying problem is usually a missing definition: different date windows, populations, identity rules or interpretations of success.

Define the population

State who enters a metric and what excludes them. Clarify whether anonymous and authenticated activity are joined, how internal users are filtered and which app versions are included.

Name an owner

Every decision-critical measure needs someone responsible for its definition and change history. Ownership does not mean one person controls the number; it means questions have a reliable destination.

Keep context beside the report

Document source events, calculation logic, refresh timing and known limitations where readers can find them. A concise definition can remove more ambiguity than a polished chart. Review definitions when the product or commercial model changes.
